ViaVersion is a Velocity proxy plugin that translates network protocols so newer Minecraft Java Edition clients can join an older backend server. When Mojang releases an update, many players change their client immediately, while a server may remain on its established version. Without compatibility, they see an incompatible version message and may leave. ViaVersion reduces that gap, helping a Minecraft server retain its community without forcing an immediate gameplay migration.

It supports multiple client and server versions, with compatibility depending on protocol changes and the rest of the network. It does not add newer blocks or mechanics to an older server, so BoxToPlay recommends keeping the proxy and plugin versions aligned as Minecraft evolves.
