ViaBackwards is a Minecraft Java Edition compatibility plugin that lets players using older client versions join a newer Minecraft server. It translates network data between protocol versions and works alongside ViaVersion, helping communities keep different client generations together across supported platforms, including Paper, Spigot, Fabric, and Velocity.

Older clients can play on modern servers, but features absent from their version may appear differently or remain unavailable. Some limitations affect world heights, sounds, inventories, and newer gameplay elements. With BoxToPlay, this compatibility layer supports a smoother shared server experience while preserving broad version flexibility.
