Minecraft 26.3: Wilderness Bound update is here

September 15, 2026

Pack your backpacks, light up your torches, and grab your best trail rations: Mojang officially releases Minecraft 26.3 today, titled Wilderness Bound. This major 2026 update celebrates outdoor living, cozy campfire evenings, and building in harmony with nature.

If you followed the early reveals in our overview of the features announced for Minecraft 26.3, the final release is now here. From a vibrant autumnal forest biome to the long-awaited cushions you can finally sit on, plus single-use straw beds that let you skip the night without losing your home spawn, version 26.3 really changes survival and exploration.

Check out the official launch trailer:

The Dappled Forest and the Arrival of Poplars

At the heart of this update is a brand-new biome: the Dappled Forest. Generating near cold biomes and taigas, this woodland is draped in a permanent autumn palette inspired by North American landscapes. The forest floor is blanketed with warm golden grass and fallen leaves, creating a welcoming, peaceful atmosphere.

The forest introduces an entirely new tree type: the Poplar Tree. These trees come in three striking foliage variations (red, orange, and yellow), each releasing matching falling leaf particles. When you harvest poplars or collect saplings, each sapling randomly grows into one of the three colorful variations. Poplar saplings can also be acquired from the Wandering Trader.

Poplar wood gives builders a long-awaited look: its natural bark yields a sleek, light grey wood once stripped or crafted into planks. The entire wood family is available from day one: planks, slabs, stairs, doors, trapdoors, fences, gates, pressure plates, buttons, and boats.

On the forest floor, you will also find small Red Shrubs that can be multiplied with bone meal or recycled in the composter, as well as naturally fallen tree trunks. Local wildlife (sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits, and foxes) automatically spawn in their cold-climate variants.

Another woodland surprise growing on tree trunks is the Shelf Mushroom. Beyond serving as an ingredient for stews, these mushrooms have a bouncy texture. Jumping on one creates a distinct bounce sound and springs your character upward, like a natural trampoline.

Over 100 Variations of Abandoned Camps to Discover

The Overworld is now filled with traces left by previous adventurers through Abandoned Camps. With more than 100 variations generated across 18 distinct biomes (including standard forests, old-growth birch forests, cherry groves, savannas, swamps, and even the eerie Pale Garden), each campsite uses materials native to its biome.

Searching these outposts reveals colorful wool tents, extinguished campfires, supply barrels, and chests containing essential early-game survival gear.

Keen-eyed explorers should always inspect beneath tents and around the camp: a secret chest is frequently buried nearby, holding higher-tier loot such as iron ingots, emeralds, and sometimes even diamonds.

On an existing world, the Dappled Forest and these camps only appear in chunks that have never been generated. If your community has already explored a lot, plan for fresh areas, a separate exploration world, or pre-generation with Chunky.

Straw Beds and Cushions: Expedition Comfort Finally Arrives

Two crafted items deliver features the Minecraft community has requested for years.

The Straw Bed

Crafted using 3 hay bales on a crafting table (yielding 4 straw beds), this makeshift bedding solves one of the biggest challenges of long-distance exploration:

  • It lets you sleep through the night safely and reset insomnia to avoid Phantom attacks.
  • It does not reset your spawn point, so you still respawn at your main base if anything goes wrong.
  • It is a disposable, single-use bed that automatically breaks upon waking.
  • It cannot be used in the Nether or the End, where it simply breaks if you attempt to sleep.
  • A new in-game statistic tracks how many times you have slept in a straw bed.

Cushions

Crafted by combining 3 wool slabs of the same color, cushions are available in all 16 official Minecraft dye colors.

Their defining feature: a simple right-click now lets your character sit on them. No more workarounds with invisible minecarts and stair blocks. You can design realistic living rooms, cozy reading corners, and gathering circles around campfires on multiplayer servers. Cushions can be placed on any flat solid block and break if their supporting block is removed.

64 New Slabs and Stairs for Builders

Builders also gain a real expansion of decorative blocks:

  • Wool slabs and stairs. Available in all 16 colors, they retain wool’s unique property of dampening vibrations and preventing Sculk sensor activation.
  • Concrete slabs and stairs. Available across all 16 concrete shades, they offer clean, modern lines for architectural projects. They can be crafted at the crafting table or cut directly with the Stonecutter to save resources.

Complete Rework of Explorer Maps

Cartography gets a quality-of-life update with the overhaul of Explorer Maps. Rather than being renamed filled maps, they are now 16 standalone items featuring dedicated textures and inventory icons.

Inside Abandoned Camp chests, explorers can uncover:

  • 8 Biome Camp Maps. They pinpoint other isolated camps in specific biomes (Bamboo Jungle, Cherry Grove, Birch Forest, Dappled Forest, Flower Forest, Pale Garden, Swamp, and Windswept Forest).
  • 7 Structure Maps. They lead adventurers toward Ancient Cities, Trial Chambers, Mineshafts, Desert Pyramids, Jungle Pyramids, Warm Ocean Ruins, and Woodland Mansions.

Additionally, explorer maps can no longer be zoomed out at cartography tables, and the player icon now always displays your exact facing direction. The buried treasure map also becomes the official icon for Adventure Mode in the game mode switcher.

Graphics Engine, SDL3, and Technical Upgrades

Version 26.3 also delivers several notable under-the-hood enhancements:

  • Order-Independent Transparency (OIT) algorithm. Minecraft now implements order-independent transparency rendering, resolving long-standing visual glitches where water, tinted glass, or clouds disappeared when viewed through other translucent surfaces (toggleable via the F3 + X shortcut).

  • New shaders and /posteffect command. Creators and resource pack developers can now apply customizable post-processing shaders directly to players’ screens.

  • Migration to SDL3. Minecraft switches from GLFW to SDL3 for window management, physical keyboard scancodes, and modern platform integration.
  • Server whitelist by default. The white-list property in server.properties is now set to true by default for newly generated servers. Existing configurations are not changed automatically, but you should check this value after an upgrade.
  • New World Options screen. The Open to LAN button in the pause menu is replaced by a dedicated World Options screen divided into General (game mode, gamerules, difficulty) and Multiplayer (LAN, port, command access) settings.
  • Spectator mode navigation. Spectator players can now interact directly with Nether and End portals to teleport across dimensions.
  • Realms management. Realm owners can manage up to 5 simultaneous invite codes with customizable expiration dates and adjust render and simulation distance settings.
  • Flexible stew recipes. Suspicious stews and mushroom stews can now be prepared with any combination of two edible mushrooms.
  • Gothic language. Historical Gothic language support has been added to the game’s language settings.
